Component Maps / Mapas de componentes

A primary objective of the 2008 field season was to create settlement maps of the study area based on ceramic distribution.  The maps below show the distribution of archaeological components.  Inguiteria measured approximately 30 square kilometers during the Natividad (Post Classic) phase, and appears as the largest red polygon in both maps.  Ñiaxuge, pictured in the southern extreme of both maps, had significant occupation during the Cruz, Ramos, Las Flores, and Transción phases.

Part of our fieldwork at Inguiteria included the mapping of a large civic-ceremonial zone originally excavated by Ignacio Bernal in the 1940s.  With the assistance of Dr. Luis Barba’s team from the laboratorio de prospección arqueológica Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, sixteen mounds and platforms were identified and mapped.  Dr. Barba’s team also took aerial photographs of the monumental area.  This allowed for the creation of the map below, which shows the position of each structure overlain on a photo mosaic of the site.
