Backround

This type was named by Joseph Caldwell for material in the Allatoona Reservoir.

Named after old Galt's Ferry over the Etowah River in Cherokee County.

Sorting Criteria

Simple stamping on dark grit-tempered pottery.

The paste of Galt is gray to black in color as opposed to the tan to brown paste of the other stamps.

Chronological Range

Historic Cherokee pottery of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Geographical Range

This type is from northwestern Georgia specifically in and around the Allatoona Reservoir.
